Clinical Development and Current Practice
I qualified as a Doctor in 1981 from Liverpool Medical School. Following my pre-registration year, I moved to London and commenced my surgical training there, being elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1986 and of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1987. I worked in the busy Trauma unit at University College Hospital.
Following this, I moved back to Liverpool to become Thackary Research Fellow for 18 months, culminating in 1990 with the award of my MCh(Orth) and publication of my Thesis investigating the bone-prosthesis interface using a Confocal Microscope. During this time I was supervised and mentored by Professor Leslie Klenerman, a founding member of the British Orthopaedic Foot Surgery Society (later, British orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society) and started my interest in foot and ankle surgery. I continued my surgical training on the Merseyside rotation, including a Revision Hip Fellowship with Professor Michael Wroblewski at Wrightington Hospital. I also became Lecturer in the Department of Orthopaedics and Accident Surgery of the University of Liverpool. I was appointed Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery at The Royal Liverpool University Hospital in 1994. Prior to this, I undertook a three centre USA Foot Fellowship to Dr Roger Mann in Oakland, Dr Sigvard T Hansen Jr. in Seattle and Dr Mark Myerson in Baltimore.
As a Consultant, I was appointed to undertake lower limb surgery including revision hip and knee arthroplasty work and to further develop the foot and ankle service. However, by 2000, I elected to focus on trauma and foot and ankle surgery. In 2005, I undertook a three week Ilizarov Senior Fellowship at the Ilizarov Institute, Kurgan, Russia and, working closely with the Limb reconstruction Unit in Liverpool, applied those techniques to deformity correction around the foot and ankle. From 2005 to 2010, I ran the orthopaedic trauma service at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital and from 2010 to 2013, I took on responsibility for implementation of a clinical audit system with electronic discharges and patient case notes.
At the same time I developed a comprehensive foot and ankle service at my Trust with the appointment of three consultants, supported by Podiatrists, Physiotherapists and a Specialist Nurse. This continues to serve the local patients and provides a tertiary referal service which extends through Lancashire, Cheshire and North Wales. This was achieved by providing easy access and adopting a team approach to the assessment and management of these patients. Quality of care was our aim. This ensured excellent commitment from the clinical team members despite the high workload. Referrals between members of the Foot and Ankle Team was undertaken at the initial assessment to enable treatment plans to be provided without delay.
I retired from the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen NHS Trust in September 2019 and now work solely at the Bone and Joint Centre, Spire Liverpool Hospital.
I have been keenly involved in hospital management, having developed and chaired the Techniques and Medical Devices group for my Trust and I was also Deputy Chair for the Clinical and Cost Effectiveness Sub-committee. I was appointed Associate Medical Director (Effectiveness) in 2015.
I have been active in the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society and was Chairman of the Scientific Committee and member of Council. I was President from 2007 to 2008. I was a Director of the Society up until November 2013
As a trainee, I was President of the 58 Society, a society of Orthopaedic Trainees and Consultants from the Mersey Region meeting for case presentations and discussion. I was also Mess President of Mount Vernon Hospital and in the past have also been a Place of Work Accedited Representative for the British Medical Association.
As a student I was President of the Liverpool Medical Students Society and also became President of the Liverpool Medical Group, concerned with exploring ethics around patient care.
Private Practice
I have been running a successful private practice since 1995 and in 2009 I joined with five other senior orthopaedic surgeons to combine our services so as to provide comprehensive orthopaedic care to all our patients. Our Bone and Joint Centre is now supported by 14 highly skilled Consultants and we work closely with our radiology colleagues at Spire Liverpool Hospital
Medico-legal Practice
I have been involved in medicolegal practice since 1988 and undertake both personal injury work and medical negligence work. My instructions are approximately 40% joint, 40% plaintiff and 20% defendant. I have experience of appearing in court as an expert witness.
Teaching and Training
I have built a dynamic team over the years and our Foot and Ankle Unit was designated jointly, a Centre of Excellence for foot and ankle surgery with international surgeons visiting to observe and discuss surgery. I have run a BOFAS registered senior Fellowship for surgeons up to October 2019. I lecture at national and international meetings. I jointly run an international foot and ankle surgery course in Liverpool for Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons. I lecture at the British Orthopaedic Association, British Orthopaedic Foot Surgery Society and European Foot & Ankle Society Scientific meetings. I am also a Faculty member on a number of prestigious national courses such as the Oswestry Foot & Ankle Course for FRCS(Orth) candidates and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital Foot & Ankle Course. I have also lectured at the King’s Charcot Foot Reconstruction Course and I have organised an international symposium at the Malvern Diabetic Foot Conference.
